Lazarus Library finds worthy books that time left behind — out of print, out of copyright, and buried in scans no one can read — and rebuilds them as complete, searchable, freely readable editions. Dozens are already free to read, with 500 more in progress across six imprints.
Every year, worthy books slip quietly out of memory. They fall out of print; the libraries and shops that carried them thin their shelves; and the only copies left online are page-photographs — impossible to search, awkward to read on a phone, and easy to scroll straight past.
A book that can’t be found or read might as well not exist. Centuries of curiosity, craft, and plain strange delight sit locked inside files almost no one opens.
Lazarus Library takes a small, deliberate number of these forgotten works and rebuilds them for the open web: transcribed in full, restored with their original illustrations, made fully searchable, and given away free.
And we don’t just resurface these texts — we augment them, adding historical notes, editorial context, maps, and interactive charts the originals never had.
No login. No paywall. No abridgement. Just the whole book, faithfully set down and easy to read — the way it deserved to survive.
